Water was here early this year. June is not the normal time for us to catch tuna in the Northwest! I made my first trip out on the 19th of June! Left from Depoe Bay at 4am. Water was not bad and we moved along nicely. We had a long way to go. I was going to go up to 75 miles if I needed to, to find the fish! The water temp was less than I would have liked to see when we dropped gear in the water. We had seen some jumping fish and had tried there a bit earlier but had gotten nothing. As we started to troll I saw a ship ahead and headed for it thinking it might be a commercial tuna boat! Before we had gone very far the rods started screaming and we had fish on. We ended the day with 19 tuna and were able to call a friend in on the bite!
Then a few days later I wanted to go again so gathered a crew for a Monday run. All four guys were new to tuna fishing and I figured I was in for a long day! As it turns out the crew learned fast and we ended the day with 35 tuna in the box! Not bad for a crew of rookies!
